aidanjensen.nc@gmail.com

The Carolina Hurricanes will have to wait a bit longer for their first preseason victory. On Wednesday night inside the Lenovo Center, Carolina lost 4-2 to the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers, providing a rematch of the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Canes struck first, leaving the ice with a 2-goal lead after 20 minutes. Ryan Suzuki tipped a point shot in for Carolina’s first tally, followed by a Jesperi Kotkaniemi wrister from point-blank range.

After a scoreless second period, Florida erupted for four goals in the third. Ben Harpur, Noah Gregor and Mike Benning helped the Panthers take a 3-2 lead, then Jack Studnicka added an empty-netter late.

Frederik Andersen started in net for the Canes, saving all eight shots he faced. Amir Miftakhov struggled in relief, saving just four of the three shots he faced.

Who does Carolina play next?

The Canes are facing the Tampa Bay Lightning for a second time this preseason, with Tampa hosting Carolina for a 7 p.m. faceoff Friday night. The Lightning won their first two preseason contests, while the Canes are looking for their first preseason victory.
