After nearly three weeks away from Raleigh, the Carolina Hurricanes are finally back on home ice.

The Canes put themselves in a strong position to win during Tuesday’s return, taking a 1-goal lead in the third period, but watched that turn into a 6-3 loss against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Just over two minutes into the final frame, Carolina (6-3) broke a 2-2 tie on Logan Stankoven’s third goal of 2025. The Canes crossed Vegas’ (6-1-3) blue line, Stankoven initially looked to pass, then fired a wrister past Akira Schmid.

Brett Howden tied the game for Vegas nearly four minutes later, Jack Eichel gave his team a 4-3 lead it never relinquished, then added a second goal moments later. Tomas Hertl’s empty-netter effectively ended Tuesday’s game at 6-3.

Andrei Svechnikov scored his first 2025 goal to open the scoring party, converting on a first period slapshot off the faceoff. After a pair of first period goals from Pavel Dorofeyev, Jordan Martinook tied the game at 2-2 on his second period breakaway, which proved to be the frame’s lone goal.

Freddie Andersen struggled in net for Carolina, saving just 29 of the 34 shots he faced. Schmid saved 21 of 24 shots in a winning effort for Vegas.

Season-opening road trip proves successful

The Canes got their first taste of road hockey this season earlier in October, winning four of their six matchups on their annual, North Carolina State Fair road trip. Carolina started with a 5-1 domination of the San Jose Sharks on October 14, won 4-1 two days later at the Anaheim Ducks, then beat the Los Angeles Kings in a 4-3 overtime decision.

The Canes watched their undefeated streak come to an end against Vegas, losing 4-1 on October 20 in Nevada. Carolina rebounded three days later, beating the Colorado Avalanche in a 5-4 shootout, before losing 3-2 at the Dallas Stars last Saturday.

When do the Canes play next?

Carolina stays home Thursday night, facing the New Islanders for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff. The Canes then head up to Massachusetts on Saturday, with a 1 p.m. faceoff set against the Boston Bruins.
