WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 15, 2017) – The Dash scrapped together six runs on six hits in the final three frames of Saturday’s contest, but it was not enough to match Buies Creek’s early onslaught as Winston-Salem fell 13-6 to the Astros at BB&T Ballpark.
Winston-Salem (2-8) received solid contributions from Alex Call, who roped a two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to score Toby Thomas and Danny Mendick for the first Dash runs of the evening.
The Dash would tally four more in the eighth as they loaded the bases on a Louis Silverio walk and back-to-back singles by Brady Conlan and Johan Cruz. Thomas then smacked one to third that forced an errant throw by Arturo Michelena trying to gun down Silverio at home, allowing Silverio and Conlan, who went 3-for-5 on the evening, to score. Luis Alexander Basabe later brought around Cruz and Thomas with a single to center.
Out of the bullpen, both Andre Wheeler (2.1 IP, 2H, 0R, 5K) and Louie Lechich (1.0 IP, 0 R, 1 K) recorded strong outings. Lechich has yet to allow an earned run in the professional ranks over 15 appearances spanning 18.1 innings.
Kyle Tucker was the star for Buies Creek (8-2), going 4-for-5 with three runs, a homer, two doubles and a career-high seven RBIs. The outfielder started the scoring in the first with an RBI double before he was brought home by Dexture McCall to make it a 2-0 lead.
Tucker did more damage as he unloaded the bases with a double to right-center field as part of a six-run second for the Astros. Dash starter Aron McRee (0-1) was replaced by Kelvis Valerio with one down in the second to end his shortest career start. McRee permitted eight runs, seven of which were earned, on six hits.
Tucker continued to wreak havoc in the visiting half of the third, launching a three-run homer to right field as part of a four-run frame that made it 12-0.
Astros starter Yoanys Quiala (2-0) tossed six innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits and striking out five to earn the victory.
The Dash and Buies Creek wrap up their four-game set with a Sunday matinee kicking off at 2 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. A pair of southpaws will square off in the series finale as Tanner Banks (1-0, 0.64 ERA) hits the slab for the Dash against Framber Valdez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for the Astros. Sunday’s afternoon tilt will be televised on my48 locally in Winston-Salem, as well as streamed on wsdash.com/broadcast and via the TuneIn Radio app.
Tomorrow marks the first Lowes Foods Family Sunday at BB&T Ballpark for 2017. Hot dogs and Pepsi soft drinks will be available for $1 until the end of the first inning, and a couple of Dash players will be on the concourse pregame to sign autographs. Kids are also invited to stay after the game and run the bases, powered by New Balance Winston-Salem. For tickets and more information, please contact the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
