WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 27, 2016) – For the first time in the Dash era, Winston-Salem strung together three consecutive home runs from Nick Basto, Marcus Davis and Telvin Nash en route to a 7-6, sweep-clinching win over the Frederick Keys at BB&T Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.
Winston-Salem cycled through the entire lineup in the bottom of the first against Keys (16-16, 52-50) starter Franderlin Romero (4-4), collecting five runs on seven hits. Landon Lassiter, who went 2-for-4 with a walk, led off the inning with a double and scored from third on a Mason Robbins triple.
The record-breaking trio of home runs followed the triple to cap the score at 5-0 in the first. Basto clubbed his team high-tying 10th home run, a two-run blast to left. Davis followed with a shot to right that pushed his hitting streak to 14 games. Nash finished off the power surge with a mammoth bomb beyond the Nature’s Select Knoll.
Overall, the offense supplied 11 hits as Robbins boosted his Carolina League-leading batting average (.319) with a 2-for-5 day. On the bump, Dash righty Jordan Stephens (5-7), the CL leader in strikeouts, added five more to his total (105) in 5.1 innings, holding Frederick to three runs on six hits.
Winston-Salem (15-18, 43-60) pushed the score to 6-0 with Basto’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second, scoring Gerson Montilla from second. In the bottom of the fourth, the Dash scored what would be the deciding seventh run as Robbins pushed Lassiter to third with a ground-rule double, allowing the center fielder to score on a wild pitch.
Dash right-hander Taylore Cherry replaced Stephens in the top of the sixth as Frederick cut the Dash lead to 7-4. Cherry supplied 1.2 innings of work, surrendering one run of his own on three hits.
The Keys threatened the Dash lead again against Jacob Morris in the top of the eighth. They added two runs thanks to an Aderlin Rodriguez double, a Cam Kneeland plunking and a Brett Austin throwing error.
Kelvis Valerio earned his third save on the season, thanks to a perfect ninth with two strikeouts, sealing Winston-Salem’s first sweep since September 1-3, 2015.
