WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 1, 2016) – Despite a complete game from Dash starter Brandon Brennan, the Carolina Mudcats collected a 3-0 win over Winston-Salem in Wednesday’s series opener at BB&T Ballpark.
Brennan (0-4), a member of the White Sox 40-man roster, delivered the first nine-inning complete game of the year for Winston-Salem (19-33) and the first for a Dash pitcher since Tony Bucciferro did so on July 20, 2014. Wednesday’s nine-inning performance was a new career-high for Brennan.
All of Carolina’s runs came in the top of the second inning. After Joey Meneses started the frame with a single, Jordan Edgerton smacked an RBI double to left to give the Mudcats a 1-0 edge. Braxton Davidson followed with an RBI double, and Reed Harper capped the scoring with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Brennan ended his night yielding six hits and three earned runs, while striking out seven batters.
Carolina (21-29) starter Matt Withrow (3-4) dazzled against Winston-Salem, throwing five innings and allowing just five hits while striking out seven. Dave Peterson and Carlos Salazar combined to hurl three scoreless frames of middle relief, and Evan Phillips locked down his sixth save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Marcus Davis extended his hitting streak to a Dash season-high 10 games with a 1-for-3 performance. Keon Barnum, who went 2-for-4, has now hit safely in 18 of 23 starts this year.
Winston-Salem once again struggled offensively at home. As a team, the Dash stranded eight runners and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Winston-Salem fell to 5-20 at BB&T Ballpark, its worst stretch at the facility in its seven-year history.
