WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Aug. 10, 2016) – Behind an eight-run explosion in the first inning, Winston-Salem rocked Carolina 15-7 in the conclusion of Tuesday’s suspended game at BB&T Ballpark.
Play resumed on Wednesday with men at second and third and one out in the Dash’s half of the first inning. On the first pitch after the pause, Nick Basto leveled a two-run double to begin the scoring. Seven of the Dash’s nine starters recorded an RBI in the first, while the Dash sent 14 men to the plate.
Winston-Salem (20-25, 48-67) fell one run shy of the largest single-inning output in the Dash era (2009-present). The club scored nine in the seventh inning of a 14-2 win at Frederick on May 7, 2015.
From there, the Dash added seven more runs over four scoring innings. Marcus Davis blasted a solo shot of the bridge in right in the second inning to make it 9-0. It was the Dash’s first home run since Brett Austin clubbed a three-run bomb at Carolina on August 1.
After Carolina (15-30, 44-71) plated one in the third and four in the fifth to pull within four, the Dash immediately responded with one mighty swing of Telvin Nash’s bat. Nash followed back-to-back walks, two of the 11 that Carolina’s pitching issued in the game, with a mammoth blast beyond the Nature’s Select Knoll in left. Overall, Nash delivered three extra-base hits and four RBIs after entering the game with just two hits in his previous 26 at-bats.
Mason Robbins continued Winston-Salem’s scoring with an RBI double in the sixth. With a career high-tying four hits, Robbins registered his team-leading 39th multi-hit game in what was his 99th game with the Dash this year.
The Dash’s third homer of the evening capped the onslaught in the eighth. Gerson Montilla blasted a two-run shot, his team-leading 12th of the season. The former Arizona farmhand paces the Dash with 59 RBIs on the year.
In all, every Dash hitter registered at least one hit and scored at least one run, while seven men collected at least one RBI. Landon Lassiter became the second player in Dash history to coax four walks in a single game.
On the mound, Tanner Banks tossed a scoreless first before rain suspended play on Tuesday. Thad Lowry made his first relief appearance since 2013 and gave up five runs over three and a third innings. Drew Hasler (1-0) pushed his home scoreless streak to 13.2 frames with two and two-thirds scoreless, while Euclides Leyer gave up two runs in two frames.
Wednesday’s regularly-scheduled game will begin at approximately 8:50 p.m. from BB&T Ballpark, and it will be seven innings in length. Southpaw Ryan Riga (1-1, 5.82 ERA) will take to the hill for Winston-Salem in the nightcap of this de facto doubleheader. Right-hander Zach Quintana (1-5, 5.45 ERA) will counter for the Mudcats. Broadcast coverage is available onwsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
This homestand concludes with a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday at 7 p.m. In addition to $1 beers, the Dash will set Lure Modules on the Pokéstop at BB&T Ballpark. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
