WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 7, 2016) – Behind some early offense, Winston-Salem picked up a 5-4 win against the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark in the finale of a seven-game homestand.
Winston-Salem (24-35) finishes 5-2 in its seven-game slate in the Triad from June 1-7, and Tuesday’s win secures the club’s second consecutive home series win. Before this stretch, the Dash had not won a home series at BB&T Ballpark this season.
For the fourth straight night, the Dash struck in the first inning. With two on and two outs, Marcus Davis blooped an RBI single off Blue Rocks starter Josh Staumont (1-6) to center to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 edge. Davis finished 1-for-4 and has now hit safely in 15 consecutive contests, the longest streak for a Dash player this season and the longest active run in the Carolina League.
The Dash added some more two-out runs in the second. With two away and runners on first and second, Mason Robbins cranked a two-run double to right-center give the Dash a three-run edge.
In the next frame, Winston-Salem scored an unearned run. After Toby Thomas reached second on an error and moved to third on a wild pitch, Brett Austin skied a sacrifice fly to left to put Winston-Salem up 4-0.
The Blue Rocks (19-37), who were shut out in back-to-back games, finally broke out their offensive funk in the fourth off Dash starter Matt Cooper (4-4). Chad Johnson stroked a two-out RBI double to break a 22-inning scoreless drought and make it a 4-1 game.
Winston-Salem pushed across their final tally in the fourth. After a Hunter Jones one-out single, Robbins smashed an RBI double to up the Dash’s lead to 5-1. Robbins ended the contest going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, pushing his multi-hit streak to six games.
For the first time in three games, the Blue Rocks chased a Dash starter from the game. Cooper would depart after allowing a two-out RBI double by Brandon Downes in the sixth to close Wilmington within three at 5-2.
Cooper finished his night tossing 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out six batters. The right-hander still leads the Minor Leagues with 92 strikeouts.
Jacob Morris completed the sixth without further damage but proceeded to walk the first three batters in the seventh. Andre Wheeler was summoned from the bullpen and the left-hander, while allowing a sacrifice fly to Wander Franco to make it 5-3, retired all six batters he faced.
Connor Walsh took over in the ninth, but the right-hander allowed one hit and three walks, the last of which forced home a run to make it 5-4. Walsh proceeded to strike out Elier Hernandez, but then gave way to Danny Dopico with the bases still loaded and two outs. Dopico buckled down and induced a game-ending groundout by Austin Bailey to pick up his first save of the season.
After a league-wide day off Wednesday, Winston-Salem begins a seven-game road trip on Thursday. The Dash will begin their trip playing four against the Carolina Mudcats before squaring off for a three-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
#YourHomeTeam closes out the first half with a four-game set against the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark from June 16-19. For your seats, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
