WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (May 10, 2017) – Behind a season-high three RBIs from Zack Collins and a strong start from Max Beatty, the Dash picked up a 5-1 victory against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in Wednesday’s doubleheader finale at BB&T Ballpark.
Collins, who was the designated hitter in the twin bill finale after starting the first contest behind the plate, tied a career-high with his performance on Wednesday. The former first-round pick had driven home three runs in a contest twice in his short time in the professional ranks, with both instances occurring with the Dash in 2016.
Meanwhile, Beatty (1-3) was strong on the mound in his first start since May 1. The right-hander tossed five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits while striking out four batters in his first win at the High-A level.
After going scoreless through the first eight innings of the series, Winston-Salem (12-21) broke through in the second inning. Johan Cruz and Daniel Gonzalez roped back-to-back singles with one out against Myrtle Beach starter Casey Bloomquist (2-3) to put runners at the corners. Luis Basabe followed with an RBI double to give the Dash a 1-0 edge.
Two batters later, Collins came up with the bases loaded and smacked a two-run single to make it 3-0 Winston-Salem. Brady Conlan capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI groundout.
The Dash added their final tally in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Collins. Following Beatty’s performance, Andre Wheeler spun two innings out of the bullpen. The southpaw gave up the only run that the Pelicans (18-15) managed on a sacrifice fly by Connor Myers in the seventh, but Wheeler proceeded to strike out Carlos Sepulveda to end the game.
