WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 29, 2016) – Dash starter Tanner Banks spun seven scoreless innings, and Nick Basto drove in all four runs to help Winston-Salem secure its season-high fifth straight victory, 4-0 over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Fridaynight at BB&T Ballpark.
Banks (5-2), who is 4-2 in the Triad, struck out a career-high seven batters. The 24-year-old’s previous high was six, which he had accomplished four times in his career. In Friday’s game, the left-hander faced the minimum through the first four frames and allowed just four hits and two walks.
Basto was the lone run-producer in the contest. With a runner on first and two outs, the former fifth-round pick stroked his team-leading 11th home run against Lynchburg starter Matt Esparza (0-1) to put Winston-Salem (17-18, 45-60) up 2-0.
In the eighth, Basto provided the Dash with two big insurance runs. With runners on second and third and one out, the Carolina League Player of the Month in April grounded a two-run single to center to make it 4-0.
Yelmison Peralta picked up his third High-A save, tossing two scoreless frames behind Banks. The right-hander has yet to yield an earned run in 12 innings with Winston-Salem.
Banks and Peralta combined to deal Lynchburg (21-13, 66-38) its first shutout loss of the season. The Hillcats entered play atop the Carolina League in batting average (.269) and runs per game (5.8).
Down 2-0 in the sixth, the Hillcats were threatening to get back into the game. After back-to-back singles by Paul Hendrix and Nathan Lukes, Mark Mathias laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third with one out. But, Banks buckled down, striking out sluggers Anthony Santander and Bobby Bradley to end the threat.
Marcus Davis’ 15-game hitting streak came to a halt with an 0-for-4 performance. During the run, the former Padres farmhand had gone 26-for-61 (.426) with two home runs and 15 RBIs. Conversely, Lynchburg catcher Francisco Mejia extended his hitting streak to 41 contests (24 games with Low-A Lake County 24 games and 17 with Lynchburg) on a seventh-inning single.
Winston-Salem continues its four-game series against Lynchburg on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Dash send right-hander Thad Lowry (7-6, 3.85 ERA) to the rubber against Hillcats lefty Luis Lugo (7-3, 3.79 ERA).
