WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 5, 2016) – Behind a nine-inning complete game shutout from Dash starter Spencer Adams, Winston-Salem defeated Wilmington 4-0 in Sunday’s regularly-scheduled contest at BB&T Ballpark.
Adams (6-3), who is rated the third-best prospect in the White Sox organization by MLB Pipeline, was in control all day long. The right-hander set a new career-high in innings and scattered eight hits. No Wilmington (19-35) runner reached third base, and only once did the Blue Crew have multiple runners aboard at once.
Adams’ complete game shutout was the first by a Dash hurler since Tony Bucciferro completed the feat against Frederick at NYMEO Field on July 20, 2014. Winston-Salem (22-35) has now thrown two nine-inning complete games in this current seven-game homestand, the first of which came from Brandon Brennan in a 3-0 loss against Carolina on June 1.
After losing the completion of Saturday’s suspended game, the Dash provided the lone scoring frame in the first inning against Blue Rocks starter Corey Ray (1-2). Hunter Jones and Mason Robbins stroked back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, and Gerson Montilla subsequently smacked an RBI single to left center to put Winston up 1-0.
After a Keon Barnum RBI groundout pushed the lead to 2-0, Marcus Davis followed with an RBI double to make it a 3-0 contest. The Cincinnati native finished the day 1-for-4 and has now hit safely in 14 consecutive contests, the longest streak for a Dash player this season and the longest active run in the Carolina League. Brett Austin capped off the frame with a two-out RBI single to make it 4-0.
Ray allowed seven hits and four earned runs in five innings of work.
The Dash are now 5-2 in their last seven games. Robbins, in his first start since Thursday, went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Thanks to Adams’ quick work, Sunday’s contest lasted just two hours and two minutes.
#YourHomeTeam returns to BB&T Ballpark on Monday night against Wilmington at 7 p.m. The Dash send right-hander Brandon Brennan (0-4, 5.97 ERA) to the rubber against Blue Rocks left-hander Colin Rodgers (1-3, 4.18 ERA).
