Whether you refer to him as The Icon, The Vigilante, The Face Of WCW, The Franchise Of WCW, Blade Runner Flash, Flash Borden, Blade Runner Sting or his given name Steve Borden The Man Called Sting is truly worthy of the WWE Hall Of Fame. As a multi time WWE and Total Nonstop Action World Heavyweight Champion he was one of if not the top guy during his run with both companies.
Sting debuted as a wrestler in 1985 and spent 14 years in Jim Crockett Promotions and then World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He debuted as a member of Power Team USA alongside the future Ultimate Warrior. As most teams in those days, they moved around a few promotions and had a few name changes as well as a heel run. By 1987 he had Tag Team title runs and Ultimate Warrior had left for the WWF.
During his run in the NWA and WCW Sting won 15 Championships , 6 times he was crowned WCW World Heavyweight Champion, twice he was the WCW International World Heavyweight Champion, He also was a multi time Tag Team and United States Champion. During his time with WCW Sting was always embroiled in top feuds and storylines including the NWO angle. This was a man who never left WCW and was it’s workhorse throughout it’s existence. He was the standard-bearer and relished the role. Whenever he was involved it always made it more memorable.
After the fall of WCW Sting elected to wait for his contract to expire and then entered talks with but did not sign with the WWE. He elected to explore other companies which eventually led him to Total Nonstop Wrestling where he was again a Main Eventer, Multi Time World Heavyweight Champion, and a member of one of TNA’s best factions the Main Event Mafia with other former World Champions like Booker T, Kurt Angle, Scott Steiner, Kevin Nash and eventually Samoa Joe. He was with TNA until 2014 and was a huge ratings draw for that company.
After he was done with TNA, the unthinkable happened. STING WAS IN THE WWE!!! His debut was a much talked about and publicized event. He was the one major star from WCW that had not been in a WWF/WWE ring EVER!! The excitement among fans and the IWC was uncontrollable! Even though only appearing a few times he made an impact with every appearance and has now rightfully taken his place as a member of the WWE 2016 hall of fame.
The measure of The Man Called Sting is not just his 30 plus year wrestling career but also of him as a person. He was a role model, a company workhorse and a guy that wherever he went would do what was asked of him to help the company. He professed his beliefs openly and to the public eye held those principles close throughout his career. The Man Called Sting is one of the best to ever lace up his boots and his longevity performing at a high level speaks volumes to that. I for one will always respect and appreciate his contributions to the wrestling business. I feel appreciative to have been able to see him perform for so long and the development of him as a wrestler and entertainer.
