EMORY, Va. – Will Freeman’s layup with three seconds left gave visiting Guilford College a 61-60 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Emory & Henry College Wednesday.

The Quakers (9-5, 4-1 ODAC) trailed for the first time just eight seconds earlier when the  Wasps’ John Shelor collected an offensive rebound and knocked down a nine-foot jumper in the lane with 10.5 seconds left. The Quakers called timeout and set up what proved the game-winning play. Alston Thompson inbounded to Jarrod Rogers who dribbled the ball up the floor to the Wasps’ foul line.  He ran a pick and roll with Freeman, who banked in his second game-winner of the season.

Emory & Henry’s (8-6, 2-3 ODAC) ensuing inbounds pass was deflected out of bounds in front of the Quakers’ bench with 1.5 seconds left. The Wasps retained possession, but the subsequent inbounds pass was also tipped out of bounds as time expired on Guilford’s fourth one-possession win of the season.

Freeman paced the Quakers with 15 points and six rebounds. Carson Long shot six-of-10 from the floor and finished with 13 points. Justen Best added 12 points and two of Guilford’s nine steals. The Quakers enjoyed a 42-26 edge in interior scoring and collected 18 points off of 14 Emory & Henry turnovers. The Wasps converted Guilford’s nine miscues into eight points.

Emory & Henry’s Chase Branscomb tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs, in 25 minutes off the bench. He was Emory & Henry’s lone double-figure scorer. Clif Conley chipped in nine points and Shelor finished with eight.

The Quakers host Shenandoah University Saturday (1/16) at 2:00 p.m.
