Salem, Va. – Guilford College’s Stephanie Flamini earned her first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year Award Wednesday night at the league’s annual tournament banquet in the Salem Civic Center. Quakers’ junior Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) received First Team All-ODAC honors and sophomore teammate Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) was a third-team all-league pick.
In addition to reaching two milestones in her 13th Guilford season, Flamini has guided the Quakers to a 19-4 overall record and second place in the February 24 NCAA Division III South Region Rankings. Guilford earned the second seed for this week’s ODAC Tournament with a 13-3 league mark after it was picked sixth in the loop’s preseason coaches’ poll. Flamini earned her 188th career Guilford victory November 24 to become the school’s career women’s basketball coaching wins leader. The Quakers defeated North Carolina Wesleyan College, 83-62, in that contest. On January 30, Flamini collected her 200th career Guilford win in a 60-58 thriller over Washington and Lee University.
Guilford’s first ODAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year since 2000, Flamini enters ODAC Tournament play with a 261-183 coaching record in 17 seasons, 203-142 at Guilford. Her Quakers have made three ODAC Tournament title game appearances in the past four years and won league titles in 2012 and 2013. She has coached 13 Quakers to 21 combined All-ODAC commendations, including three-time first-team pick Gabby Oglesby ’14. Flamini also serves as Guilford’s senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director.
Weatherly, a 5-11 forward, earned first-team honors after her second-team selection in 2015. The 23-game starter tops Guilford in most statistical categories, including scoring (15.7 ppg.), rebounding (9.7 rpg.) and assists (2.4 apg.). She ranks fifth among ODAC scoring leaders and third in rebounding, which makes her one of two students in the top five of both categories. She also averages a league-best 3.2 steals per contest, the 36th-highest average in NCAA Division III. Weatherly leads the league in offensive rebounds (3.5 rpg.) and her 46.6% field-goal percentage stands 13th. She ranks among the ODAC’s top-10 in 11 different statistical categories. Weatherly completed regular-season play with 12 double-doubles, which includes a season-high 24-point, 15-rebound performance against Emory & Henry College February 17.
Ramsey is a first-time All-ODAC selection. Her 11.0 points per game average stands second on the team and 19th-best in the ODAC. She also contributes 4.2 rebounds and shares the team lead with 2.4 assists per game. Ramsey established herself as a consistent option for the Quakers’ offense with 14 double-digit scoring performances, including a career-high 21 points in a 65-54 victory over Hollins University January 13. She was Guilford’s leading scorer on six occasions and led the team in assists eight times.
The Quakers open tournament play in Thursday’s quarterfinal against seventh-seeded Randolph-Macon College. The contest begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Salem Civic Center.
