BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Rookie Trevor Mayo (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) had a school-record nine steals and scored nine points in Guilford College’s 86-56 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Bridgewater College Sunday afternoon. He made six first-half thefts and keyed a defensive effort that allowed just 16 first-half points.
Sunday’s win capped a sweep of the season series with Bridgewater (6-14, 5-7 ODAC) and marked the Quakers (13-8, 8-4 ODAC) second 30-point win in as many days after Guilford downed Shenandoah University Saturday, 91-60. Guilford last won two consecutive games by 30 or more points in 2010.
Despite playing their second game in as many days, the Quakers (13-8, 8-4 ODAC) raced to a 41-16 halftime lead. Alston Thompson (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) netted 11 of his game-high 14 points in the opening frame, during which time Guilford held the hosts to just 4-of-25 shooting (16%) from the floor and forced eight turnovers, six of which were forced by Mayo. Guilford outscored the Eagles, 24-4, in the final 9:37 of the first half.
The Quakers had a season-high five students in double-figure scoring, paced by Thompson, who also had seven rebounds. Will Freeman added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds off the bench and fellow reserve Trever Hyatt (Hickory, N.C./East Burke) tallied 12 points, nine in the opening half. Dominique Henderson (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) also scored 12, thanks to a 3-for-3 effort from three-point range. He has now made his last nine three-point shots. Guilford’s Carson Long finished with 11 and three boards in 14 foul-plagued minutes. Zachary Houston (Hickory, N.C./St. Stephen’s) did not score, but did distribute a career-high 10 assists.
Trenton Ray led Bridgewater’s offense with 11 points off the bench. Efe Balfou added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Eagles were outscored in the paint, 44-10, and gave up 22 second-chance points.
