Excitement is brewing in Greensboro, as the Grimsley Whirlies prepare to embark on their 2024 varsity football campaign. With the schedule now released, fans eagerly anticipate the thrilling matchups that lie ahead for their beloved team.
Returning Players:
Leading the charge for the Whirlies is junior quarterback Faizon Brandon, a rising star who made waves in the 2023 season. Brandon showcased his talent by throwing for over 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns, demonstrating poise and playmaking ability beyond his years.
In the backfield, Grimsley boasts a dynamic running back in rising senior Mitchell Summers. The junior standout made a significant impact in the 2023 season, rushing for over 2,100 yards and 15 touchdowns, showcasing his speed and elusiveness in the open field. Mitchell averaged 8.8 yards per carry last season and 150 yards per game on the ground.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior defensive lineman Bryce Davis anchors the Whirlies’ front seven. Davis was a disruptive force in the trenches in the 2023 campaign, tallying 8 sacks and 10 tackles for loss, showcasing his ability to wreak havoc on opposing offenses.
Head Coach Daryl Brown, guides the Whirlies into battle once again. Under his tutelage, Grimsley compiled an impressive 13-1 record in the 2023 season and advanced to the 4A Western Regional Semifinals of the state playoffs, falling just short of a championship run losing on the road to eventual 4A champ Weddington.
