Carolina Panthers Release QB Matt Barkley, Leaving Cam Newton In Prime Poistion

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule won’t have four quarterbacks from which to choose to close out the season, as the team released Matt Barkley. The move leaves them with three quarterbacks—Cam Newton, Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker — on the active roster. Barkley, 31, signed with the team on November 9, right after Darnold suffered a right shoulder fracture in the Week 9 loss to New England.
