Bowman Gray Racing Recap – Week Ending Sat July 22nd 2023

Only four weeks remaining in the 2023 campaign. Some championship hopes are heating up, others are crashing and burning. As it was double points night for all divisions while the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series ran the 100 lap event sponsored by FOX8 WGHP 100.

The top four qualifiers for modified would have the option of starting in the rear for a shot at the $9,000 Fans’ Challenge where you had to go to the back and race your way through the field and finish in the top four.

Street Stock would kick the night off with Jordan Atkins starting on the pole. Brad Lewis would get by her and go on to dominate holding off Cale Martin for his fourth win of the season. Kevin Gilbert finished third, Chase Lewis finished fourth.

There is now a three way tie for first place in the points race between Christian Joyce, Brad Lewis, and Austin Jones.

Next up, would be the first of two Sportsman races. Tommy Neal and Zack Ore started on the front row. After multiple attempts at dropping the green, after the third try the leaders would get it right. As Neal would get loose coming to the line Ore would take advantage and grab the lead. Zack Ore would dominate by leading every lap to pick up his third win of the season. Sterling Plemmons finished second, Justin Taylor third, Chase Robertson fourth. and Michael Adams fifth.

Time for the main event, the Fox8 WGHP 100. Burt Myers originally won the pole but after the full field redraw, however Burt Myers was the only driver to elect to go to the back of the field and take on the Fan’s Challenge. As for the other drivers in the top four (Tim Brown, Brandon Ward, and Lee Jeffreys) elected not to take the challenge. John Holleman IV would be rewarded the pole after the redraw, and Jason Myers would start second.

After yet another race where it would take multiple attempts at going green Jason Myers would get by Holleman to take the lead.

Myers would lead flag to flag and fend off multiple drivers who would take the outside in hopes of passing him for the lead after each restart. As there were a total of eight cautions.

Jason Myers who won last week in the first 25-lap race in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series, would go on to pick up another win Saturday night for his third win of the season and 40th of his career. Myers would hold off runner-up Danny Bohn for the win, Holleman finished third, Brandon Ward fourth, and Chris Fleming, your new the points leader fifth.

Burt Myers would make his way up through the field and seemed to be in a promising position to make the top-four, but after a spin Myers would fall back. He would finish 10th, behind Tim Brown.

With no one collecting the $9,000 prize pool, it will roll over to the next 100-lap race on Aug. 5, when it will increase to $12,000.

After double points were awarded on Saturday, Fleming would take the lead with 540 points, 13 ahead of defending champion and 12-time champion Brown. Ward moves up to third with 516 points, Burt Myers would fall to fourth with 507, and Jeffreys is fifth with 501.

Up next would be the second of the two Sportsman races.

The 15 year old Riley Neal would hold off Chase Robertson in the second 20-lap Sportsman race for his third win of the season. This would be Neal’s fifth career win.

“It feels amazing,” Riley Neal said. “I just can’t give enough thanks to the Lord for letting me do this every day, blessing my family, all my sponsors, me, everybody.”

Michael Adams finishes third, and Ore, who drew 16 in the “Madhouse Scramble,” finished fourth.

Chase Robertson leads the points race with 576, Zack Ore is second with 568, and Riley Neal is third with 561.

Stadium Stock time! As Points leader A.J. Sanders would pick up his third win of the season, defeating Chuck Wall. Isaac Harris was third, Blaine Curry was fourth, and Brandon Brendle was fifth.

Sanders leads the points race with 602 points, Brendle is second with 572, and Harris and Curry are tied for third with 550.

Tyler Bush, who would be filling in for Wyatt Sapp, picks up his first win at Bowman Gray as well as the first win for Sapp Racing in the Stadium Stock “B” race in the Q104.1 Stadium Stock Series.

“I’ve never won here before…,” Bush said. “I finally got it done tonight. First of all, I’ve got to thank Wyatt Sapp.”

Carson Reed was runner-up, followed by Junior Smith third, and fourth to Joel Stewart.

Officially four weeks in the Bowman Gray Stadium schedule. Next week will be highlighted by the Colors Edge Sportsman 100, which is a 100-lap race for the McDowell Heating & Air Sportsman Series. There will also be double-file restarts with a cone.

In addition, there will be twin 25-lap races in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series, a 20-lap race in the Law Offices of John Barrow Street Stock Series, and either one or two 15-lap races in the Q104.1 Stadium Stock Series.
