Bowman Gray Q&A: Drew Moffit

drew moffitt

Finally!!!!! Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to 2021’s first Q & A, after a year off due
to the Covid-19 pandemic, Bowman Gray Stadium Racing is back! With the first race
of the season being June 5 th . I had the opportunity to interview Drew Moffitt, driver of
the 51 modified. Drew has also run Stadium Stock where he picked up 4 wins in 34
starts including 2011 Stadium Stock 50 Lap Main Event as well as the 2011 Top
Gun award winner. As he has only competed in just 13 starts in modified including
just one top ten finish and a runner up finish in the Modified Rookie Points Standing,
Drew will be more eager to add to his stats.

Q: What was it that got you interested in racing?
A: My interest in racing started when I was 6 years old. My grandpa and Dad both
Drag race locally at Farmington. We spent a lot of time at the track and it became a
passion. 1998 rolled around and my dad bought me a Jr Dragster and I made my
first pass down the track. Bad decision because I’ve been hooked ever since!

Q: Who would you say was your favorite race car driver growing up?
A: Growing up I admired a few great drivers. When I was little, I pulled for Bobby
Labonte but I’d have to say nobody done it like Dale Sr did. He was a hell of a driver!

Q: You drove stadium stock for a while, what was it that made you want to move up
to modified and not race in the other divisions?

A: We ran stadium stock from 2010 to 2012. First year was kinda a raw learning
deal. Got comfortable mid-season and lucked into a B race at the end of the year.
2011 was by far the best year in stadium stock. Me and my dad worked out butts off
putting a lot of hours in that car and it showed. Won the first race out and won the
biggest race over there the 50 lapper leading every lap. That was a amazing feeling
running against all the heavy hitters like Jason Keaton, Chuck Wall, Michael Wells,
Johnny Burke the list goes on. We moved up to modified simply because I felt like I
had accomplished all that I could. We won a race. Won the biggest race for the
division. And simply had a shot at the title but just luck never felt our way. Moving up
to modified and running at Bowman Gray has always been a huge dream of mine.
I’ve sat in those very stand and watch Burt, Tim, John Boy, Randy Burner and all
these guys get after it. I know it’s a challenge and I’m willing to try to concur and beat
all the odds. I wanna be able to say I’ve won at Bowman Gray in the modified
division and get my name on that winner’s list in the program.

Q: What win would you say means the most to you?
A: Probably winning the 50 lapper in 2011 knowing we worked out asses off on the
car that year and leading all the laps and winning was quite unreal.

Q: Other than winning what would you say is the proudest moment of your career? A: I would have to say just spending time with my wife and family and crew at the
track. We all love being at the track and be around one another in that environment.
With all that went on in 2020 with the pandemic, it really makes you appreciate just
being in that environment with your crew!

Q: You’ve ran the # 69 and 51, what’s the meaning behind it and do you feel you’ve
had more success running one number vs the other

A: The whole number situation is pretty good story for me. Growing up going over to
the races I always rooted for Junior Miller. He and my grandpa are pretty good
friends and that where running his number came from. I respect Junior a lot. Many
people have very mixed opinions, but he’s always been very good to me. The 51
came from of course Days of Thunder. One of the best movies of all time in my
book.

Q: Of all of your competitors, who would you say you enjoy racing against most?
A: I enjoy running against everyone. I have a lot of respect for those guys in the
modified Division. A lot of those guys I have leaned on for advice on driving these
high horsepower cars.

Q: What would you say you enjoy the most racing in Mods or Stadium Stock?
A: Hands down the Modified because of the horsepower to weight ratio. When you
push the gas pedal in one of these cars you know it!

Q: What track would you say you enjoy racing at the most?
A: I really enjoyed running the KOMA race at Kingsport TN. That track was one of
the challenging yet fun I have ever run!

Q: I know you have a little one now, what would it mean to you if he comes to you
and says “hey dad I want to be a race car driver too” would you want him to follow
your footsteps?

A: It would be pretty cool to have that time with my kid like my dad has spent with
me. Me and my pops have always been hand and hand with my racing because we
simply love to do it. I know I’m looking forward to spending as much time as I can
with my boy weather we are racing or playing ball I’ll support whatever he shows
interest in doing. My wife is hoping baseball though because it will be cheaper

Q: Could we see you running Sportsman or Street Stock at BGS?
A: No plans be to run anything else. Racing modified is my home!

Q: It’s been a year since anyone has been on the track, what was it like during
the pandemic not being able to race and what were you able to do to keep
sane?

A: Since the pandemic we’ve really just been trying to stay sharp on our
progress in this new car. I’ve been doing a little sim racing and enjoying life
with a baby. Life’s good I can’t complain but I’m also dying to strap back in
and go racing!

Q: Does having a year off motivate you more now to go out there and win
than in the past?

A: The drive to win never stops! We all know how hard it is to beat the best
over there at the stadium. If I didn’t think we couldn’t do I’d find something else
to do! A lot of hard work over the past 2 years has went into this new car and I
am hoping it will pay off big!

Q: Last question, it’s something I like to ask drivers. “If you could race against any
legendary driver, who would it be and why?

A: If I had one person to race against, I would love to go back and run against Richie
Evans. Boy I can say he would take me to school though.  It would be awesome to
see him drive and learn from him. He was way far ahead of his time in the Modified
Division!

I would like to thank Drew Moffitt for taking time to do this interview that was originally
scheduled for last year. I wish Drew nothing but the best of luck this season and look forward to
chatting with him at the track!
