ACC Football – Wake Forest vs Kennesaw State Prevew – Fri Aug 29th 2025

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Demon Deacons begin a new era on Friday night when they welcome Kennesaw State to Allegacy Stadium, opening their 2025 campaign under first-year head coach Jake Dickert. Dickert joins the Deacs after winning the Head Coaching job from his interim position at Washington State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with coverage on ACC Network

After a 4-8 finish in 2024, Wake Forest embraces a clean slate in 2025 under a new coaching staff after longtime Head Coach Dave Clawson abruptly left the coaching field to become an advisor . Early returns have the Deacons coming out on top of the newly minted Division 1 Kennesaw State, giving Dickert the start to his tenure he needs.

Kennesaw State enters its second season in the FBS and first full year in Conference USA, led by new head coach Jerry Mack, formerly with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their running backs coach. The Owls quickly rose through the FCS ranks with multiple conference titles before transitioning upward, posing an intriguing first test for the Demon Deacons.

Owls Quarterback Dexter Williams II, a transfer from Indiana and Georgia Southern, brings collegiate experience and mobility to Kennesaw’s offense in a direct challenge to Wake’s defense.

Key Storylines

1. New Offense, New Direction
Wake’s offense under Dickert seeks momentum early. With a season-opening win over Kennesaw State, the Deacs can build confidence in execution and rhythm heading into conference play. Offensive MVP potential rests on running back Demond Claiborne, who is viewed as key to establishing the ground game

2. Former Auburn QB touted to lead the way

Robby Ashford has won the QB competition against Charlotte transfer Deshawn Purdie. Ashford, a redshirt senior, has played at South Carolina, Auburn, and Oregon in his college tenure.

2. Defensive Depth in Action
Against a fresh FBS opponent, Wake’s defense gets an opportunity to dominate the line of scrimmage. Kennesaw State’s attack is unproven at this level, giving the Deacs a chance to showcase their front-line athleticism and try to get their defense on the right track after a lackluster 2024

3. Measuring Progress Across the Board
This matchup serves as a benchmark, not just for the running game or defensive rotations, but also for special teams and situational discipline. A clean, confident performance would signal growing competence under the new system and a bright outlook for the season.

Challenges and Expectations

While projections largely favor Wake, early-season matchups can deliver surprises. Weather, game-day jitters, and mistakes can impact game flow. Wake can control the variables best by executing their gameplan across all phases.

Bottom Line

For the Demon Deacons, Friday isn’t just an opener-it’s an opportunity. A commanding home win would validate offseason adjustments and set momentum for the more demanding ACC slate ahead. The Deacs have an opportunity to build momentum over the first two weeks of the season as they welcome FCS Western Carolina to Allegacy Stadium next week before taking on ACC foe NC State. Four straight home games is the perfect opportunity for the Deacons to start off the Dickert era on the right foot.
