Campbell (The University, Not the Soup) Continues to Dominate Weekly Awards

The Campbell Fightin’ Camels continue to own the Big South Weekly Awards. It shows in team records, as their soccer teams are near tops in the Big South Conference.

In my article last week that I wrote about the Big South Weekly Awards, almost every student-athlete that I talked about was from Campbell University. Campbell has a knack for creating athletic programs that are successful for years to come, most notably the baseball program, which has turned out professionals like Cedric Mullins, one of the outfielders on the Baltimore Orioles’ 2019 Opening Day roster.

It is not close to college baseball season yet, so it will be a while before I start writing about college baseball. It is currently soccer and football season, and those two sports are exactly what I am here to talk to you about today, specifically with athletes from one university.

Campbell University took home three Big South Weekly awards, all in soccer. In women’s soccer, it was freshman midfielder Amber Liston who earned Freshman of the Week Honors. In a pair of matches last week against UNC-Charlotte (4-1 loss) and Wofford (4-0 victory), Liston recorded a goal and an assist. The highlight of her week was her goal against Charlotte, which occurred in the 62nd minute of that game, effectively preventing the Terriers from coming back. Liston will look to continue her strong play on Saturday, September 21 vs. UNC-Asheville.

In men’s soccer, it was freshman defender Bissafi Dotte and freshman midfielder Adrian Morales who won Big South Weekly Awards. Dotte earned Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against in-state rival UNC-Greensboro, whom the Camels shutout. He has helped the Camel defense shutout opponents in every match since September 1. Morales scored the game-winning goal in the same game, as his goal came in the seventh minute of play. This was Morales’ third goal on the season. Dotte and Morales will look to continue their strong play tonight, as they travel to Myrtle Beach to take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

There were no Big South Weekly Football Awards for North Carolina schools in the Big South for this past week, but that could certainly change for next week, as Campbell hosts Davidson at 6:00 P.M. on Saturday, and Gardner-Webb travels to Wofford, taking on the Terriers in another 6:00 P.M. contest.

Will Campbell continue to pile up awards for next week? There is no telling. With the way their soccer teams are playing (Women’s Soccer is 4-2-1, Men’s Soccer is 3-1-1), Campbell could certainly find themselves in articles next week.
