UNC outlasts Boston College in Overtime, 102-96

 Chapel Hill, NC- RJ Davis scored seven points in overtime and Seth Trimble scored the go-ahead jumper, lifting North Carolina to a 102-96 victory over Boston College on Saturday at the Smith Center. 

Davis hit a 3-pointer for a 94-91 lead near the three-minute mark of the extra period and after Boston College tied it. Davis made two free throws for a two-point lead near the two-minute mark. After BC tied it again, Trimble’s jumper put the Tar Heels up 98-96 with 1:42 remaining. The Eagles did not score the rest of the way, Davis hit two free throws with 53 seconds left and Ven-Allen Lubin’s jam with 28 seconds left secured the victory. 

Seth Trimble scored the last four points of regulation on a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left and a jumper five seconds later. UNC used a foul to give with three seconds left and forced a turnover with one second to go, sending the game to overtime. 

Carolina played well overall early. They shot 58 percent from the floor as a team in the first half. However, they couldn’t seem to put away the Eagles. The Eagles entered the game having lost five in a row, including an 18-point loss at Virginia earlier this week. UNC shot 55.6 percent overall. 

BC shot 55 percent in the first half. They took their first lead in the final six minutes of the period. They built a lead that grew to as many as five points after halftime. The Eagles set season highs with 14 three-point field goals. 

RJ Davis scored 22, for the Tar Heels while Ian Jackson had 19, Trimble and Jalen Washington added 18 each, and Elliot Cadeau had 13 for the Tar Heels (13-8, 6-3 ACC), who had lost by one point in back-to-back games. Seth Trimble added 12 rebounds for his second double-double this season. 

Boston College (9-11, 1-8) was led by Donald Hand Jr who scored 26 points, Dion Brown scored 20, Chad Venning had 177, and Joshua Beadle had 14. 

North Carolina had an 8-0 run late in the first half to take a 46-45 lead at halftime.There were 10 ties and five lead changes in the second half although North Carolina never led in the last 5 1/2 minutes. Both teams shot nearly identical from the field Boston College at 54.5% and UNC at 55.6%. North Carolina shot at 6-of-16 from 3 pt range for 37.5% and Boston College shot 14-of-24 for 58.3%.

The Tar Heels outrebounded the Eagles 36-23. North Carolina had 58 points in the paint to Boston College’s 42. North Carolina also had 12 fast break points to just 2 for the Eagles. Both teams scored over 10 points off turnovers, North Carolina had 13 and Boston College had 12. 

The Tar Heels moved to 24-9 all-time against BC, including 22-5 since Boston College joined the ACC in 2005-06. Carolina has won six in a row and 18 of the last 19 meetings in the series. The Tar Heels scored 100 points in an overtime against an ACC opponent for the first time since 2008. Carolina is 6-1 all-time when scoring at least 100 in OT against ACC foes. 

UNC has two road games in the upcoming week — Pittsburgh on Tuesday and at their rival #2 Duke on Saturday. Boston College hosts Florida State on Saturday after a week off.
