Sandra Vicente knows fitness.
The Owner of Body Patterns Fitness and Wellness in Kernersville sat down with SportsCarolina Monthly for an interview on her passion (fitness), Boxing, Can Mike Tyson still Box, whats new with Body Patterns and more!
SCM: Sandra, when did you decide to devote yourself to fitness? What made you decide to be a fitness trainer?
Vincente: Actually I was an athlete from middle school to high school, and when I graduated, I had started my first year towards my B.A. I realized it was going to take me 4 years to finish her degree to be a Physical Education Teacher. So I decided to take that year, went to junior college to study and from there….why I decided to? I think it was in my nature as an athlete to continue that path….and the 2 year plan seemed like a better idea.
SCM: You mentioned you were an athlete? What sports did you grow up playing?
Vincente: In middle and high school….I played soccer, indoor and outdoors….soccer, volleyball and basketball. But I was too physical for basketball…because I came from soccer I guess (laughing). Those allowed me to play year round in a sport. Then when I was in high school I continued to work out and got into boxing hard core, 6 days a week.
SCM: That was something I did notice looking at your site at kernersvillefitnesstrainer.com, we see that you are certified in multiple things in regards to fitness and health. Tell us a little bit about your certifications?
Vincente: So right now I have a USA Boxing certification, its advanced. Im certified as a coach, I can train young adults that want to compete in amateur ranks. I just want to give my knowledge and what I know to the young kids. I even recommend them products like that protein powder.
SCM: How long have you been boxing?
Vicente: I started when I was 10…I got more serious about boxing around the age of 15. I started focusing more on boxing after high school.
SCM: One of the things I noticed on the website is that you are listed as the head boxing coach at Body Patterns? How did you get into the boxing in the first place? Was there a favorite boxer you gravitated towards?
Vicente: Well…there’s a story behind it.
SCM: Ok so what was it, tell me the story….
Vicente: I was bullied at a young age, and my mother decided to take me to boxing. I did it but it wasn’t something I liked to do. But my coach kept telling me I was getting good at it. So I just continued doing it.
I remember when I went to another gym in Puerto Rico, the guys didnt want a girl in their gym and I was the only girl in there. But that gave me more motivation to continue.
SCM: Do you have a favorite boxer?
Vicente: Well I trained and competed out of Miguel Cotto’s gym. He was an idol in Puerto Rico. Roy Jones….Floyd Mayweather. Boxing is all about strategy and planning.
SCM: Have you seen the recent Mike Tyson videos? Do you think Mike could still fight?
Vicente: Absolutely! He looks great at age 54. There is a lot of mental that goes into boxing. Tyson should come back.
SCM: So how do people sign up or find your video workouts to train from home during Covid-19?
Vicente: The best way is to email me at [email protected] or visit kernersvillefitnesstrainer.com and fill out the contact form.
SCM: What are the different types of workouts you are providing currently with the limitations due to the pandemic?
Vicente: Right now Im offering high intensity boxing, via Zoom. Its 35 mins per class, with a 5 minute cool down. Elastic bands are recommended. Its only 10 bucks per class…people pay via Venmo (@sandravicente) or Cash app (@vicentetrainer) I offer special packages upon request. Those come with a nutritional plan and guide as well.
SCM: What about kids? Its summer, but a lot of things are closed. do you offer options for kids to work out as well to keep them active?
Vicente: Im working on a “Foundation of Boxing” 4 day workout plan for younger athletes. Teaching kids proper footwork, defense etc. Its not only putting on gloves and hitting a bag, its about why you’re doing it also. The reason for a combination…you throw those fancy combo, how many will you actually land in a fight….good defense is more important…you learn how to defend yourself.
SCM: Ok lets talk about Sandra….what’s your favorite meal after a day of running classes, boxing and staying fit?
Vicente: I love Thai food. Pad Thai with noodles. Ive been a vegetarian for the past 6-7 years.
SCM: Favorite movie of all time?
Vicente: I dont really have a favorite movie! But I love documentaries. Seeing how successful people became successful. Motivational speeches. Its very spiritual to me, so I watch a lot of motivational speeches and videos.
SCM: Whats your favorite class to teach and why?
Vicente: They are fast learners and curious. 6-15 year olds. 90 min courses, on Saturday, we will let people know when those courses open again for everyone.
SCM: So let us know how to sign up for in person classes, massages, etc?
Vicente: Yes, Im also a licensed massage therapist. You can book at www.body-patterns.com. You can schedule at the site. I offer deep tissue, Swedish, cupping, sports massage and stretches. The website gives summary of what each session consists of. Visit the site and check us out!
