Pistons 118, Hornets 100 — Game recap

Friday, April 10, 2026 | Spectrum Center, Charlotte, N.C.

The takeaway: Charlotte had a chance to keep its shrinking hopes of avoiding the play-in alive, but Detroit slammed that door shut. The Pistons beat the Hornets 118-100 in Charlotte’s home finale, locking the Hornets into the Eastern Conference play-in tournament and snapping what had been one of the team’s better late-season runs. Detroit was steady all night, then blew the game open with a game-deciding surge from late in the third quarter into the fourth. (ESPN.com)

  • Final: Pistons 118, Hornets 100

Key stats

Detroit shot 45-for-89 (50.6%) from the floor, 9-for-27 (33.3%) from three, and 19-for-26 at the line. Charlotte shot just 34-for-88 (38.6%), went 13-for-47 (27.7%) from deep, and lost the rebounding battle 49-41. The Pistons also had a big edge in ball movement, finishing with 29 assists to Charlotte’s 16. (ESPN.com)

For the Hornets, LaMelo Ball led the way with 27 points and 8 assists, while Brandon Miller added 22 points. Coby White scored 11 off the bench, and Miles Bridges and Kon Knueppel each had 10. Detroit was led by Jalen Duren’s 20 points and 9 rebounds, Duncan Robinson’s 19 points, Cade Cunningham’s 14 points and 7 assists, plus double-figure scoring from Ron Holland II (13) and Ausar Thompson (12). Game flow — the moments that mattered

This was not a sleepy late-season game. The teams went at each other from the opening minutes, and the tone turned physical almost immediately. Less than two minutes in, Brandon Miller and Duncan Robinson were each hit with technicals after Miller landed on Robinson after a dunk and Robinson shoved him away. The game stayed tight for most of the first three quarters, with 11 lead changes and 13 ties through late in the third. (ESPN.com)

Charlotte actually hung in well for most of the night. The Hornets held their last lead at 83-82 with 5:52 left in the third quarter, and the teams were still tied 87-87 with 2:46 left in the period. From there, though, the game flipped hard. Detroit ripped off a 24-8 burst to turn a toss-up into a blowout, building a 111-92 lead with 6:23 to play. That stretch ended the game. (ESPN.com)

The Hornets never recovered in the fourth. Charlotte scored only 10 points in the final quarter, and one outside recap noted the Hornets went just 2-for-19 from three in that stretch as Detroit’s defense and discipline took over. The Pistons’ control and composure were especially notable given that they had already clinched the East’s top seed but still played their regular starters. (ESPN.com)

Player & coaching notes

Ball and Miller were again Charlotte’s top offensive answers, but the Hornets could not get enough support elsewhere once Detroit tightened the screws. Ball’s scoring kept the game alive for long stretches, and Miller had another aggressive scoring night, but Charlotte’s poor shooting and inability to generate easy points late were too much to overcome. (ESPN.com)

Detroit, meanwhile, looked like a team with real postseason sharpness. Duren was efficient inside, Robinson gave them spacing, and Cunningham controlled the tempo. The Pistons also won the season series 3-0, another reminder that this was a difficult matchup for Charlotte all season. (ESPN.com)

Afterward, Hornets.com noted that head coach Charles Lee stressed that “there’s still goals that we have,” a clear sign Charlotte’s focus has already shifted from the missed opportunity Friday to the play-in stakes still in front of them. (Hornets)

Why Charlotte lost

The biggest reason was shot quality and efficiency. Detroit shot over 50% overall, while Charlotte finished under 39% and under 28% from three. That gap was simply too large once the game tightened up in the second half. (ESPN.com)

The other killer was the late run. Charlotte was tied late in the third, then got outscored 24-8 over the next several minutes and never got back in the game. What had been a competitive night turned into a comfortable Pistons win almost instantly. (ESPN.com)

Detroit also controlled the glass and the flow of the game. The Pistons won rebounds 49-41, assists 29-16, and got more balanced production across their rotation. That showed up most in the fourth quarter, when Charlotte’s offense stalled out completely. (ESPN.com)

As of Saturday, Charlotte sits 9th in the East at 43-38, ahead of 10th-place Miami (42-39) and behind 8th-place Philadelphia (44-37). Even after the loss, the Hornets are locked into the East 9-vs-10 play-in matchup against the Heat; they can no longer climb into the top eight. (CBS Sports)

What is still up for grabs is home court in that 9-vs-10 game. Charlotte will host Miami as the No. 9 seed if the Hornets beat the Knicks on Sunday or if the Heat lose to the Hawks. If Charlotte loses and Miami wins, the Hornets would slide to No. 10 and have to go to Miami for the elimination game. (CBS Sports)

The 2026 SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament runs April 14-17. The East 7-vs-8 game is set for Tuesday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. ET, the East 9-vs-10 game is Wednesday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. ET, and the final game for the East’s No. 8 seed is Friday, April 17. The NBA playoffs begin April 18. The loser of the 9-vs-10 game is eliminated; the winner advances to face the loser of the 7-vs-8 game for the conference’s final playoff spot. (NBA)

Quick look ahead

Charlotte closes the regular season Sunday at New York, and even after Friday’s loss, that game still matters. The Hornets cannot avoid the play-in anymore, but they can still earn the more favorable path of hosting Miami instead of traveling for a win-or-go-home game. (ESPN.com)
