Cup Fever is heading to the Triad as NCFC hosts Charlotte FC in the round of 32 of the US Open Cup. The single-elimination competition hosts both MLS and USL Championship sides to compete for the Lamar Hunt trophy in a round robin tournament. Neither one of these clubs have won the US Open Cup before and are hoping to add it to their trophy cabinet this year.
Charlotte FC is coming into this match on some lesser form than the hosts. After losing the previous matches to the New England Revolution and Columbus Crew, The Crown is hoping to end their run of poor form in the league with a victory in the cup. North Carolina FC on the other hand is coming into this match on good form. Having won their first match in the cup with an impressive 3-1 win over the Charlotte Independence and having won their last league match to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, NCFC is hoping to continue their good form and defeat a second team from Charlotte in the cup. NCFC have only been able to go as far as the round of 32 in this tournament previously, as Charlotte FC has been able to surpass and compete in the round of 16 twice.
The second division side will have their hands full dealing with a high performing MLS team, as they try to defend their spot and advance in the competition at home. The match will be played at the First Horizon Stadium in Cary on May 6th.
