Newman thankful for honor of being named Wake starting QB (via DemonDeaconDigest.com)

With two game-winning two-minute drives under his belt in just four games at starting quarterback, Jamie Newman knows how to come from behind for a big victory.

Newman was named the Wake Forest starting quarterback to begin the 2019 season, and it didn’t take a final-week surge. He held a slight advantage over sophomore signal called Sam Hartman and named as the starter 12 days before the season kicks off against Utah State on Aug. 30.

“It’s just an honor,” Newman said after practice Sunday. “I thank Coach for giving me the opportunity and obviously it feels great, because I worked for this for a long time. I just want to help the Deacs win every game.”

The Deacs scrimmage again Monday night, but Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson went ahead and announced the decision perhaps a few days earlier than some fans and media expected.

“I wasn’t worried about that,” Newman said about the timing. “I was just focusing on getting better every day.”
