GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Trever Hyatt scored eight of his game-high 14 points in the second half of the Quakers’ 46-43 victory over Dickinson College in Wednesday’s final game of the Guilford Holiday Classic.
Guilford and Greensboro both went 2-0 in the two-day tournament in the Quakers’ Ragan-Brown Field House. The Pride outscored the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg, 101-62, in Wednesday’s tourney opener.
Hyatt helped Guilford (6-4) start the second half on a 17-4 run that turned a three-point halftime deficit into a 10-point lead. Tournament Most Valuable Player Will Freeman and fellow all-tourney selection Carson Long both scored four points in the decisive spurt that opened a 34-24 margin with 8:58 remaining in regulation.
The Red Devils (2-7) reeled off six straight points to make it a 39-35 contest with 5:42 remaining. Guilford responded with Hyatt’s third and final three-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer, which gave Guilford a 42-35 edge.
Brandon Angradi’s three-pointer with 56 seconds left brought Dickinson to within 46-43.
The teams traded missed shots in the final minute, including an Angradi three-point attempt that rimmed out with nine ticks left. The Red Devils fouled to send Guilford to the line. Following a Quakers’ miss and Dickinson rebound, the guests called up one more play for Angradi, whose open look from some 25 feet rattled out.
Neither squad shot over 33 percent from the floor in the defensive struggle that saw three ties and four lead changes. Guilford’s Freeman and Trevor Mayo both finished with eight points. Teammate Zachary Houston, also an all-tournament pick, did not score, but the point guard had 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals, all game highs.
All-tourney selection Ted Hinnenkamp and rookie Mike Hinckley paced Dickinson with 11 points apiece. Hinnenkamp led the Red Devils with seven rebounds.
In Wednesday’s first game, Greensboro converted 21 offensive rebounds into 25 second-chance points in a rout of Pitt-Greensburg. Simeon Howard led six Pride students in double-figure scoring with 18 points and 11 boards. All-tournament honoree Donavan Griffith dunked regularly on the way to 15 points, four assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Greenboro’s Parris Scales notched his second double-double in as many days with 12 points and 12 boards, which helped him to all-tourney recognition. Zedric Bennett knocked down three three-pointers on the way to 13 points for the Pride, which outscored the Bobcats (6-4), 66-30, in the paint.
Jerell Figueroa’s 10 points paced Pitt-Greensburg, which turned the ball over 21 times and lost the rebounding battle, 57-36.
Guilford visits Randolph-Macon College Saturday (1/2) at 2:00 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.
