First Report: UNC Runs Past Seminoles, 77-59 (via InsideCarolina.com)

Nassir Little and Cameron Johnson led UNC with 18 points a piece

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — No. 8 North Carolina used a 14-1 run starting midway through the second half to gain a comfortable double-digit lead over No. 16 Florida State and cruise to a 77-59 win over the Seminoles. The win ended Florida State’s eight-game winning streak. FSU got within four points (56-52) at the 10:36 mark before Luke Maye hit a three-point shot to move the lead to seven. Maye tossed in another three during the run as the Tar Heels pulled away.

Carolina locked down on defense during the run. Florida State failed to make a field goal for 8:32 minutes (10:36 to 1:57) during that key stretch in the second half.

The win moved UNC to 22-5 overall and 12-2 in the ACC.

Nassir Little led UNC in scoring for the second time this season with 18 points, both times tying Cameron Johnson (21 points against Elon). He was 6-for-11 from the field and punctuated his performance with two rim-shaking dunks.

Up only three points at halftime, point guard Coby White scored six points to propel a 9-2 Tar Heel run to start the period. White finished with 10 points on 4-for-13 shooting.

Luke Maye and Cameron Johnson rounded out UNC’s leading scorers and both posted double-doubles. Maye finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Johnson had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Tar Heels continued their dominance on the glass, out-rebounding the Seminoles 47-32.

The first half was a cold shooting affair by both teams as the Tar Heels were 38.9 percent (14-for-36) from the field and 18.2 percent (2-for-11) from three, while the Seminoles shot 35.5 percent (11-for-31) from the field and 33.3 percent (6-for-18) from three.

Points in the Paint

Despite poor shooting from three (2-for-11) UNC controlled the paint in the first half, outscoring Florida State 20-6 in the first period. This came after the Tar Heels outscored Duke in the paint, 62-28, in Wednesday’s win in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Carolina’s success scoring inside goes against the narrative surround this year’s team as a perimeter-based scoring squad.
