First Report: UNC Routs Pitt in ACC Opener (via InsideCarolina.com)

The Tar Heels improved to 54-12 all-time in ACC openers, including an 11-5 mark under Roy Williams.

PITTSBURGH – No. 15 North Carolina made quick work of Pittsburgh on Saturday to open its ACC conference slate with an 85-60 road win at the Petersen Events Center.

UNC’s Coby White overcame a shaky start to lead all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting (4-of-10 3FG). His counterpart – Pitt’s standout freshman point guard Xavier Johnson – appeared up for the challenge early, capitalizing on a pair of White turnovers to score six points in the opening four minutes of play.

White and the Tar Heels (11-3, 1-0 ACC) settled down and locked down Johnson (14 points, 5-of-15 FG), thereby eliminating Pitt’s primary scoring option and exploding out to a 24-point lead late in the first half. The Panthers never cut their deficit to less than 22 points after halftime.

Luke Maye notched his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. UNC shot 43.2 percent from the floor, including 41.7 percent from three, while holding Pitt to 30.6 percent shooting (10.5 percent 3FG).
