ATLANTA – Cameron Johnson’s shooting stroke stayed hot on the ACC road as the fifth-year wing scored 22 points to lead No. 9 North Carolina past Georgia Tech, 77-54, on Tuesday.
Johnson sparked a deciding run after halftime with eight points in the first 95 seconds and finished the game by connecting on 8-of-10 field goal attempts, including a 4-of-6 mark from three-point range. In UNC’s four ACC road games this season, the senior is averaging 18.5 points on 55.3 percent shooting (61.5% 3FG).
The Tar Heels opened the second half with a 25-5 run to take a 54-29 lead with 13:25 to play and led by as many as 30 points in front of a sellout crowd of 8,600 at McCamish Pavilion.
UNC shot 47.5 percent from the floor and 48.1 percent from long range while stifling the Yellow Jackets into 35.0 percent shooting (12.5% 3FG).
Georgia Tech’s poor shooting display led to plenty of early offense opportunities for the Tar Heels, who made 10-of-17 field goal attempts during a 13-minute stretch in the first half. UNC’s 24 fast break points are its second-highest total of the season.
