CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 13 North Carolina grinded out a 75-69 victory in a defensive affair with Notre Dame to improve to 3-1 in ACC play on Tuesday.
“I got my wish,” UNC head coach Roy Williams told reporters during his postgame press conference. “I wanted to win one ugly. We did that.”
Neither team shot the ball well as the Tar Heels struggled to score in the paint against Notre Dame’s zone and Mike Brey’s squad had similar results against UNC’s man scheme. The Tar Heels shot 39.7 percent from the floor (42.9% 3FG) to the Irish’s 41.0 percent, thereby placing an emphasis on defense and the boards. It marked the fifth time in six games the Tar Heels have held their opponent below 42 percent shooting.
The Tar Heels (13-4) took control in the late stages of the game with a 12-1 run to turn a deficit into a 69-59 lead with 1:25 to play.
