The Carolina Hurricanes have extended their win streak to seven games, continuing their very strong push as the regular season winds down. Their last win marked another all-around team effort, with contributions coming from all lines, including great goaltending from Pyotr Kochetkov. But one issue still lingers — an underperforming power play.
What’s Working for the Hurricanes?
The Hurricanes have been firing on all cylinders across their seven-game win streak, with their five-on-five play taking center stage. Carolina’s ability to control the puck and dictate the tempo at five-on-five has been a major factor in their success. The depth of their four lines has also been a standout, with contributions coming from across the board.
The penalty kill has been excellent and continues to improve as the season progresses, successfully shutting down opposing power plays and even generating offensive chances. Pyotr Kochetkov has been even better between the pipes, making crucial saves when the team needs them and giving the squad confidence with his ability to keep the puck out of the net.
The Power Play Problem
Despite overall success at five-on-five and on the penalty kill, the Hurricanes’ power play remains a major area of concern. Carolina has struggled to maintain consistent pressure with the man advantage, with zone time becoming an issue and zone entries sluggish. In the last seven games, the Canes have gone 2/17 on the power play, which is well below the league average and certainly below Carolina’s standards. As they look to solidify their positioning in the standings, this is an issue that needs to be addressed before the postseason begins.
Looking Ahead: San Jose Sharks
The Hurricanes will face off against the San Jose Sharks tomorrow night in the SAP Center. The Sharks are not in the playoff race, but they’ve been playing spoiler to teams in the Western Conference. Carolina won’t just stay sharp if they want to extend their winning streak to eight games.
With Kochetkov continuing his strong play and Carolina’s five-on-five dominance, the Canes are in good position to extend their streak. However, the power play needs to find some consistency if they want to make a statement in the final stretch of this season.
