Canes Corner: Canes Split Four Games In Second Week Of 2025, Retire Eric Staal’s Jersey

[email protected]

Despite struggling to generate a consistent winning streak, the Carolina Hurricanes are maintaining their position as one of the Eastern Conference’s top teams.

Carolina (26-15-3, 56 points), currently third in the Metropolitan Division, is 4-3 through seven 2025 games so far. The Canes recently completed their second week of New Year hockey, going 2-2 in a stretch with three consecutive home games.

Let’s take a deeper dive into Carolina’s recent results – and look ahead to its next games

Canes lose heartbreaker during final minute in Tampa Bay

If there’s one team Carolina can’t seem to solve, it’s the Tampa Bay Lightning, who consistently go deep into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Canes played their second 2025 road game in Tampa, losing 3-2 to the Lightning on Tuesday, January 7. Carolina was in this game until the final minute, when Brayden Point’s tie-breaking, 24th goal sealed things for the hosts.

Andrei Svechnikov tied the game at one in the first period, while Jordan Staal later did the same in the third.

Carolina rides balanced, high-scoring effort to big win over Toronto

A hat trick is one of the rarest achievements a player can record in hockey, but Canes captain Jordan Staal did exactly that against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Carolina beat Toronto, 6-3, on Thursday, Jan. 9 as Staal led a balanced scoring attack with goals in each period.

Staal’s first goal tied the score at two late in the first period, helping the Canes overcome an early, 2-0 deficit. Staal opened the second period with a short-handed goal, another rarity. Staal’s third goal, which completed the hat trick, extended Carolina’s lead to 5-3 just 20 seconds into the third period.

Seth Jarvis, Jackson Blake and Eric Robinson also scored for the Canes.

Dustin Tokarski nabs shutout, Carolina beats Vancouver

When you talk about journeymen NHL players, Canes goalie Dustin Tokarski should come to mind.

Tokarski was previously a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens, Anaheim Ducks and Buffalo Sabres.

On Friday, Jan. 10, Tokarski stopped 14 shots in Carolina’s 2-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Svech and Jordan Staal helped Tokarski’s big night in goal, each scoring once.

Eric Staal’s jersey retirement game spoiled by Ducks’ overtime win

The Canes honored franchise icon Eric Staal before Sunday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks, retiring his jersey and recognizing his contributions across an 18-year NHL career. Staal played his first 12 NHL seasons in Raleigh, highlighted by his lone, 100-point (45 goals, 55 assists) during Carolina’s lone Stanley Cup title.

The Canes lost to Anaheim, 3-2, but tied the game up with Svech and Jarvis’ third-period goals. Carolina enjoyed the first chance of overtime, recording a shot on goal off a one-timer, but the Ducks scored on their ensuing trip down the ice.

Who do the Canes play next?

Carolina will play the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday, Jan. 15 in the Empire State, with the two Eastern Conference opponents facing off at 6 p.m. Buffalo (16-22-5, 37 points) has the worst record and least points amongst Eastern Conference teams.
