Canes Corner: Canes Lose In Overtime At Isles, Mikko Rantanen And Taylor Hall Help Shutout Rangers

[email protected]

The Carolina Hurricanes spent their past two games in the Empire State, facing a pair of Metropolitan Division Rivals in the New York Islanders and New York Rangers.

Carolina entered their game on Long Island with four consecutive wins, hoping to further close their gap with the Washington Capitals. The Canes ended up losing to the Isles in overtime, 3-2, but debuted new roster acquisitions Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall.

Carolina returns home to face the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, January 30. But first, let me give you a quick run down on the Canes’ quick trip to New York.

Islanders score three unanswered, come back to down Carolina

Hockey’s a long game, but the Canes are good enough to hold an early lead, particularly given defense is a strong suit of theirs.

Such wasn’t the case on Saturday, Jan. 25, as Carolina blew a 2-goal lead and lost, 3-2, in overtime against the Isles.

Jack Roslovic scored his 18th goal of the season – just 5:18 into the first period. Just over a minute later, Sebastian Aho added his 16th tally on the year.

Alexander Romanov and Anders Lee tied the game for New York in regulation, then Brock Nelson delivered the overtime winner.

Hall, Rantanen deliver first points as Canes in shutout of Rangers

After not recording a single point against the Islanders, Rantanen and Hall each recorded one in Carolina’s 4-0 shutout of the New York Rangers.

Andrei Svechnikov scored 56 seconds in, with Hall assisting on his goal. With less than a minute to go in the second period, Svech scored again – this time with Rantanen assisting.

The Canes scored their third and fourth goals in a span 1:26, with both coming early in the final period. Aho tallied his 17th on the season, while Seth Jarvis joined the scoring party with his 19th season tally.

Who does Carolina play next?

The Canes battle the Chicago Blackhawks (16-29-5, 37 points) Thursday, Jan. 30 for a 7 p.m. face-off. Chicago, the Pacific Division’s last-place team, lost to Carolina in overtime on Jan. 20 in the Windy City.
