Bowman Gray Q&A -Modified Driver Jason Myers – Weds Jan 29th 2025

Ladies and Gentleman I had the pleasure of interviewing a third generation driver modified driver, Jason Myers. Jason has 41 victories in the Modified division, along with 16 wins in Street Stock and a championship. He has raced in the SMART modified series, where he has 104 starts, but still searching for that first victory in the series. But Jason does have wins on the tour. He ranks in the top ten most all time in Bowman Gray History with a total of 57 career wins at the Stadium. While he is still searching for his first Championship at the Madhouse, he does have a State Championship that he won in 2015.

In 1999 he was rookie of the year for all of Bowman Gray divisions while he was running Street Stock. Then in 2003 he won rookie of year for Modified.

Q: I normally like to ask what got you interested in racing, but coming from a racing family I have an idea. But what was it about racing that sparked your attention?

A: Watching my dad drive a modified at Bowman Gray.  It was pretty obvious to me that I wanted to do it too.

Q: What have you learned while running the SMART tour over the years, that you are able to bring back to the Stadium and use to make your car and you better?

A: What I’ve learned is if you find something that works on the Smart tour is that it may not work at BG.  The stadium is so different from anywhere else that we race at.

Q: Coming from a racing family and being a third generation driver, how much pressure has it been on you to go out there and out run Burt every week?

A: There’s no more pressure on me to outrun my family than there is for me to outrun everyone else.  There’s a pressure either way.

Q: What is some advice you would give the young kids who are wanting to become a race car driver?

A: I would advise them to learn how to work on race cars.  Dont just drive them because you get a better understanding of the driving if you can understand how the car works.

Q: Over the years, how much trash talk has there really been or if any between you and Burt on who is a better race car driver? I know we saw a glimpse of it back in the day on the TV show “Madhouse”

A: We don’t really talk trash to each other nor to anyone else.  Racing isn’t a sport where you talk trash.  The biggest trash talk is winning.  We pick with each other some at the shop.  We always have.

Q: What is it like working in the same shop as Burt? Seeing what they do knowing you have to compete against them?

A: It actually helps having another team in the same shop.  We can share information and ideas that can benefit the both of us.

Q: Obviously, you have the same goals and expectations as every other driver. But is there one in particular goal/expectation you have set for yourself this season?

A: My goal is the same every year.   I want to win as many races as possible.

Q: With the Clash coming to Bowman Gray, how do you think the cup guys will handle the track?

A: I think for the most part, most of them will catch on pretty quick.  It’s still just a racetrack and these guys are professionals.

Q: With the Modifieds running the day before the Clash, I know winning a championship is a top of your list of accomplishments you would love to have. But you would you say it would be a bigger deal to be the winner of the first Madhouse Classic? With all of NASCAR being there to witness it or would it be bigger to win the championship this year?

A: Winning this race is bigger than a championship.  Winning a championship isn’t something you set your eyes on until you’re in the position to win one.  Both sound nice!

Q: What is it about Bowman Gray that stands out to you compared to all the other tracks you’ve raced at?

A: There’s no one thing about BG that stands out.  It takes everything over there coming together to make it a special place.

Q: You ran Street Stock in the beginning of your career, you won a championship and 16 victories. Do you ever think about possibly going back and racing in Street Stock’s or even any other divisions before you retire at the Stadium?

A: No but I do miss the good ole days when it was just good, fun racing!

Q: Who would you say you enjoy racing against and along side of? And who would you says the toughest competitor?

A: Burt’s probably the toughest competitor out there. I enjoy racing with Burt because he’s going to give you everything he’s got but he’s not going to wreck you.

Q: Recently I interviewed your spotter Brant, what would you say makes you two work together so well, as you have worked together for over 21 years?

A: What makes Brant so good at being a spotter is that we’ve been working together so long that we think the same.  Double file restarts at BG is one of the hardest positions to be in for the driver and the spotter.  Brant has to get up on his toes every time I have to get up on the wheel.

Q: You have raced at many different tracks over your career, what track stands out the most to you?

A: Concord probably stands out the most because not only was it a super fast race track, there was a dog leg in the back stretch.  You had to hold it wide open through that turn and hold your breath at the same time.

Q: We see Slate is racing now and trying to make a name for himself as a fourth generation Myers, could we ever see your little one join in on the Myers history and race?

A: Yeah I’m sure it’s coming.  I know once I put him in a racecar, he’s not going to want to do anything else.  I’m letting him do everything else first so he doesn’t miss out on anything as a kid.  He’s a heck of an athlete.

Q: Of course I’m sure you lean on your dad and your brother for advice, is there any other drivers you look to for advice?

A: If my dad or Burt can’t give me advice then who else do I ask?

Q: After every race, fans line up at your trailer to get pictures, autographs, merch or just talk to you. How special is it to know you have one of the biggest fan bases at Bowman Gray?

A: It really means a lot because even on a bad night, that makes it not so bad.  It is super special.

Q:  You unfortunately didn’t get a win last season, We all know wins don’t always come so easy, but do you have a set number of wins you’d like to get to before your career is over?

A: A million!  I just want to keep moving up on the all time win list.

Q: Of all your wins what win stands out the most, as your biggest win of your career?

A: I beat my dad for my first modified win at BG so that’s probably the most special one I’ve had.

Q: You had some feuds/rivalries over the years, was there a feud/rivalry that you can say you actually enjoyed being a part of?

A: No.  Those never end well.

Q: Last question, it’s something I like to ask drivers. “If you could race against any legendary driver (BGS or NASCAR) who would it be?”

A: It would have to be my grandpa and my great uncle.  I’d like to have a big Myers race with all four generations.

I wanna thank Jason for taking time and interviewing with me. I wish him the best of luck this season, as he look to get back to their winning ways in a quest to get his first championship at the Stadium.

Make sure you catch The Madhouse Classic 1 It will be ran on February 1st and the NASCAR Cookout Clash will be ran February 2nd.

The official 2025 season starts April 19th for Bowman Gray.
