Championship contests got tighter in all four divisions and several big wrecks helped the Truliant Federal Credit Union Night of Destruction live up to its billing at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday night July 20.
Reigning Modified champion Burt Myers of Walnut Cove was the fastest qualifier and led all the way in the first of two 25-lap events for the Brad’s Golf Cars Series for open-wheel NASCAR Modifieds. It was his third victory of the season and the 81st of a career that has produced nine
championships at the tight quarter-mile asphalt oval. “Winning the pole and getting out front is the recipe for these short (25-lap) races,” said Myers, who drew 10th in the ‘Madhouse Scramble’ format to invert the field for the second race. Randy Butner of Pfafftown, who finished 10th in the first race, parlayed the pole position into his first victory of the season in the second 25-lap Modified race. It ended a Bowman Gray victory drought just one day shy of a year.
“These things are just so hard to win,” said Butner of his 18th main event victory in four decades of competition at the Madhouse.
Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem, a two-time winner this season, was applying heavy pressure to Butner in the final laps when he shot sideways after contact. A big wreck followed and damaged several cars, including those of title contenders Jonathan Brown, Lee Jeffreys and Burt Myers.
Burt Myers limped home in a damaged race car and was credited with 13th in the second race – enough to escape with a slim four-point lead in the standings. Jonathan Brown (14th) and Jeffreys (17th) were not able to continue. Tim Brown of Tobaccoville, chasing a record 11th Modified championship, finished third and second in the two races, leapfrogging Jonathan Brown for second in the standings. Jonathan Brown, runner-up in the first race, slid to third in the points, just six off the top.
“It’s going to go down to the wire,” Myers predicted. “We all know it. I hope these fans are ready for it because everybody here is putting all they’ve got into it.”
Teenager Nate Gregg of Lexington became one of only a handful of third-generation winners at the Madhouse when he prevailed in a 20-lap race for the Law Offices of John Barrow Street Stock division. Gregg is the son of former Street Stock champion Billy Gregg, an active driver in the division and 15-time winner. The winner’s Grandfather, the late Jimmy Gregg, won a total of six races competing in three different divisions at Bowman Gray. In the Carolina Wood Floors Winners Circle, he dedicated the victory to his Grandfather and family member Casey Kepley Jr. – who is fighting cancer.
“This is just incredible for our family,” said the 15-year-old Gregg after his 28th start in the division. Billy and Nate Gregg, along with their uncle Ricky Gregg, will be the guests on the upcoming edition of the Triad Racing Podcast with host Randy Pettitt.
Ricky Gregg won titles in Sportsman (3), Street Stock and the former Blunderbust division for luxury sedans at Bowman Gray – and had a total of 45 victories across the three divisions. Dylan Ward of Winston-Salem nearly swept both races in the McDowell Heating and Air Sportsman Division. He overtook reigning series champion Kevin Neal of Walkertown and won the first 20-lap race for his fifth victory in the past five events at Bowman Gray.
“Man, we’ve been so lucky this year,” said Ward, who drew the third starting position for the first race. “But don’t get me wrong, the car is really strong, too.” It was the 13th victory of Ward’s Sportsman career in by far his best season at the Madhouse.
Ward drew 14th in the ‘Madhouse Scramble” inversion and was in position to strike if second-race winner Neal made a bobble. Neal was able to drive from 13th to the front and hold on for his first victory of the 2019 season. “Finally,” he said with fists pumped in jubilation. “Defending the title is out the window for us, so I am all about winning races right now.”
Amber Lynn of Walkertown returned to Sportsman competition after missing a week due to a much-publicized dust-up with a former boyfriend that led to both of their arrests. She finished fourth in both races. The title race in the New County Q 104.1 Stadium Stock division for four-cylinder cars was shaken up after Chuck Wall prevailed over Grayson Keaton in dramatic fashion.
Lexington’s Wall, a three-time champion, tangled with Mocksville’s Keaton in the final lap. Both slid across the finish line. Officials awarded the victory to Wall and ruled Keaton second. A 10th place finish for Mocksville’s A.J. Sanders left him in a three-way tie for the point lead with Wall and Brandon Brendle (who finished third in the 15-lap race). Keaton, whose three 2019 victories are tops in the division, is fourth in the standings, just four points out of the lead.
In the second 15-lap race, Dwayne (D.J.) Dean of Thomasville won for the first time of his career at the Madhouse. The last of three 100-lap Sportsman races is the main event for a night of racing sponsored by Colors Edge on Saturday, July 27 at the famed quarter-mile. A race for two-car teams chained together will be an added attraction.
