ACC Football Preview – Duke vs Tulane – Sat Sept 13th 2025

The Duke Blue Devils head into New Orleans on Saturday night for a marquee non-conference matchup against Tulane at Yulman Stadium. Both programs enter Week 3 with something to prove: Duke sits at 1–1 and is looking to find consistency, while Tulane has started hot at 2–0. For Duke and QB Darian Mensah, this game represents a chance to bounce back and make an early-season statement against a strong Group of Five opponent after an embarrassing performance against Illinois last week.

Quarterback Darian Mensah returns to New Orleans for the first time since spending last season with the Green Wave, where he established himself as one of the AAC’s most dynamic playmakers before transferring to Durham. Now he returns to face his former teammates and coaches in what is set up to be an emotional and hostile environment. Tulane’s defense knows his tendencies, and Mensah knows their schemes, which makes this chess match one of the most compelling layers of the contest. Duke must rely on Mensah’s poise and experience to guide the Blue Devils through their first road test of the season.

The game itself shapes up as a battle of contrasting styles. Duke prefers to move the ball through the air, with Mensah distributing to receivers like Andrel Anthony and Cooper Barkate. Barkate has the ability to stretch the field vertically and produce explosive plays. In their first two matchups, the Blue Devils have been at their best when the passing game is in rhythm, producing chunk yardage and keeping defenses spread thin. Tulane is built differently. The Green Wave thrive on a bruising ground attack that chews up the clock and keeps their defense fresh. Their ability to establish the run early could test a Duke defensive front that has been inconsistent against physical rushing teams in recent years.

For Duke to succeed, the offensive line must protect Mensah and give him time to make reads. Tulane’s front seven is athletic and aggressive, capable of collapsing pockets quickly, so the Devils will need to mix in tempo and balance to keep the defense honest. While Duke leans pass-heavy, sprinkling in a functional ground game will be crucial to avoid becoming one-dimensional. Duke finished with only 82 rushing yards last week. On the defensive side, the priority is obvious: stop the run on early downs and force Tulane’s quarterback into third-and-long situations. The Blue Devils have been able to get to the quarterback. Forcing obvious passing situations allows the Blue Devils to stay aggressive. If Duke can get the Green Wave off schedule, it will open the door for turnovers and short fields.

Turnovers in general may decide this contest. Duke has had moments where drops, penalties, and mental mistakes have killed drives or extended opponents’ possessions. The Blue Devils turned the ball over 5 times last week which was the clear turning point in their lopsided loss to the Illini. In a tight, low-spread game, those small miscues loom large. Playing clean, disciplined football on the road will go a long way toward the Blue Devils turning the season around. Special teams could also tip the scales. Field position, hidden yardage on punts, and reliable kicking matters when margins are slim. Que’Sean Brown needs to bounce back after a back breaking muffed punt in the first quarter last week setting up Illinois’ first touchdown.

For Duke, the formula for victory is clear. Win the turnover battle, protect Mensah, and let the receivers make plays downfield. Use Mensah’s inside knowledge of Tulane’s personnel and coaching tendencies to anticipate defensive looks and expose them. Stay composed when the Green Wave land an early punch. If Duke executes in those areas, the Devils have every chance to walk out of New Orleans with a signature non-conference win.

This matchup will not be easy. Tulane is physical, disciplined, and playing in front of a fired-up home crowd. But Duke has the playmakers to match them blow for blow. If the defense can hold up against the run and the offense stays sharp, expect a close finish that may come down to the final possession. Look for the Blue Devils to escape New Orleans with a 28-24 win. The Blue Devils will find a way to silence the Green Wave and give Mensah a triumphant return to his old stomping grounds.
