ACC FOOTBALL: 2025 Duke Football Season Preview

Dark Horse or Bust? Is this the year Duke makes their move on the National Level

August 12th, 2025

Year Two of the Manny Diaz Era: Continuity at Last

For the first time in years, Duke football enters a season with something rare in modern college football: stability. After a 9–3 regular season in 2024—and without a surprise offseason coaching exit—the Blue Devils appear primed to build off their recent success.

Manny Diaz returns for his second season at the helm, and his blueprint is starting to take shape. Last year, Duke swept its non-conference slate and held leads in all three of its ACC losses before ultimately falling in the Gator Bowl to an explosive Ole Miss team led by Lane Kiffin and Jackson Dart. The result? A promising season that ended on a flat note—but a clear foundation was laid.

Portal Playmakers: The Next Star Quarterback?

Duke’s biggest storyline entering 2025 is the arrival of Darian Mensah, a sophomore quarterback transfer from Tulane. After Malik Murphey broke the school record for passing touchdowns (26) last year and departed for Oregon State, the Devils needed another home-run addition. They found it in Mensah, widely considered the No. 1 quarterback in the transfer portal this offseason.

Mensah isn’t alone. The Blue Devils also brought in:

  • Andrel Anthony (WR, Oklahoma): A proven Big 12 target with game-breaking speed
  • Landen King (TE, Utah): A red zone weapon and physical blocker
  • Seven other transfers, strengthening the roster across the board

Losing offensive leaders like Murphey, Starr Thomas (RB, Tennessee), and veteran receivers Eli Pancol and Jordan Moore hurts, but Duke may have “reloaded” rather than rebuilt.

Defense Remains the Backbone

While Duke’s offense brings intrigue, the defense is where championship hopes reside. The Blue Devils return two preseason All-ACC selections:

  • Chandler Rivers (CB): A lockdown defender and proven big-game performer
  • Terry Moore (S): The vocal leader in the secondary with ball-hawk abilities.

With Manny Diaz’s aggressive, blitz-heavy approach and a returning core of battle-tested veterans, expect Duke to again rank near the top of the ACC in takeaways and sacks.

Game-by-Game Breakdown: A Schedule With Opportunity

Duke’s 2025 slate offers an appealing mix of winnable early games, tough road tests, and just enough chaos to make things interesting. Here’s how it could play out:

Week 1: vs Elon – Win
A no-doubt opener to break in the new offense under Mensah.

Week 2: vs Illinois – Win
An early test and opportunity against a Big Ten squad to set the tone for the season.

Week 3: at Tulane – Win
Mensah’s return to his original school could fuel a big performance.

Week 4: vs NC State – Win
A key ACC showdown at home. The Blue Devils have had the Pack’s number in recent matchups..

Week 5: at Syracuse – Loss
Trap game. The Dome magic strikes again. The Blue Devils disappointingly drop their first.

Week 6: at Cal – Win
A cross-country trip, but Cal is not great.

Week 7: vs Georgia Tech – Loss
The Yellow Jackets always play Duke tight and find a way to win. Duke finds another L

Week 8: at Clemson – Loss
Duke will be a heavy underdog. A win here changes the season narrative and put Duke on the National map.

Week 9: at UConn – Win
An ideal bounce-back week before the final stretch.

Week 10: vs Virginia – Win
Winnable home game to bolster ACC standing.

Week 11: at UNC – Win
The Belichick Bowl. Manny has been here before, Chapel Bill hasn’t. Duke wins.

Week 12: vs Wake Forest – Loss
A late-season letdown after a rivalry high. Perfect spot for the Deacs to sneak in.

Final Record Projection: 9–4 (5–3 ACC)- Middle half of the league depending on how a few games turnout

Can Duke Reach Charlotte?

Thanks to the new divisionless ACC format, the top two teams in the conference will meet in Charlotte for the title game. With Clemson looming, Duke may need to run the table outside that game to get in—but the opportunity is real.

If the offense clicks early and the defense maintains its 2024 form, the Blue Devils could be playing for more than just bowl positioning. Some experts have even floated the “dark horse playoff” label, pointing to Duke as a potential 2025 version of SMU.

Final Word

This season is about momentum, opportunity, and belief. The roster is talented. The coaching staff is stable. And the schedule is manageable.

For Duke Football, 2025 is more than proving 2024 wasn’t a fluke—it’s about proving they belong on a national scale
