It’s not an exaggeration to say that Duke recruiting this offseason has not gone accordion to plan for the Duke staff and whether you believe it’s the loss of their main talent lander Jeff Capel who packed his bags for a head coaching job at Pitt or just the natural order of things, the pendulum swing as it were it’s been a summer where a program normally known for landing who they want has not really been able to land anyone. I still prescribe to the notion that each instance has it’s own story and that it probably isn’t some sort of trend but in the eyes of college basketball fandom, perception is reality.
Monday could possible stem the negative tide if Duke is able to land small forward Wendell Moore out of Concord, NC and Cox Mill High School. Moore, the 23rd ranked prospect according to 247 sports and 25th by ESPN will make his college choice on Monday, October 8th. Moore will be choosing between Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Wake Forest according to tweet from his account. While most experts consider Duke the favorite to land the services of the versatile 6’5 forward / guard it could easily go a different way. If this summer is any indication it’s hard to call any school the leader. What the Blue Devils can offer Moore is immediate playing time; with the predicted departure of R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson and Cam Reddish – 2 guard / wing position as well as the small forward position will have a plethora of minutes to go around. Coach K has never been shy about putting the best talent on the floor regardless of class so the opportunity is there as is the exposure.
There are still other targets that Duke is pursuing. After having Anthony Harris in for a visit but not being able to offer the Virginia combo guard a scholarship Duke still has offers out for Boogie Harris who is strongly considering both UNC and USC currently. Isaiah Stewart who has indicated that he’s still open and with Washington and Kentucky both making big ground with the Indiana power forward, he is another possible prospect that Duke is still in the running for but one who has has a very odd and quiet recruitment. Duke is still also involved with Vernon Carey Jr. out of Florida, Matthew Hurt from Minnesota. Combo guard Cole Anthony is also still on the Duke radar as well.
We’ll find out Monday whether Coach K and Duke can ink Moore or if the woes of the 2019 class continue for the Blue Devils.
