Luke Maye is back. The 6’8″ Junior Forward announced on his Instagram account this morning that he is planning to return to the North Carolina Tar Heels Basketball program for his senior season in 2018-19.
Maye had elected to test the NBA draft waters, but did not hire an agent. By not hiring an agent, Maye retained eligibility to return to Chapel Hill before the deadline of May 31st.
On Instagram, Maye said:
I have had a great experience learning from the NBA process and growing as a basketball player during the past couple weeks. I would like to thank my family, friends, coaches and teammates for all of their support. Through this process, I have decided that I am going to comeback to school to improve as a player and finish my college career. I am looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that I will face and there is no better group to do it with than my teammates and the Carolina family! Time to finish the right way with two of the best players and leaders that I know! Let’s finish our legacy the right way!#RoadtoMinneapolis
Maye has gone from averaging 1.2 ppg and 5 mins per game his freshman year to 1st team All ACC last year with 16.7 ppg and 10.1 rebounds per contest. Maye was instrumental in helping the Tar Heels win their 6th national championship at the end of the 2017 season.
Maye will be an early favorite for national player of the year awards and All American team as he returns for his senior year at North Carolina.
