Larry Johnson is one of the most beloved sports athletes in Charlotte’s history.

Johnson played his first 5 seasons with the Charlotte Hornets, after being drafted #1 overall in the 1991 NBA Draft. With the Hornets he averaged 19.1 ppg and 9.2 rebounds per game, making the All Star Team twice in that span. Johnson was traded to the New York Knicks before the 1996-97 season.

Johnson would be a candidate on a “Mt Rushmore” of Charlotte athletes, joining Steve Smith, Cam Newton, Muggsy Bogues among numerous others. Johnson is best remembered for his ferocious dunks, shooting range and of course his alter ego, “Grandmama” who he appeared as in ads for his signature Converse sneaker.

Here we take a look back at classic Hornets footage as we run down the top ten plays for Larry Johnson!
