This would be a scenario the Panthers couldn’t pass up.

Just one day away from the NFL Draft, there have been plenty of mocks unveiled over the last number of hours, but one recent mock draft from has the Panthers coming away with arguably their best possible outcome picking at No. 24 overall.

NFL media analyst Curtis Conway released his first mock draft on Monday, just days ahead of Thursday’s first-round festivities from Dallas, and he has standout Florida State safety Derwin James falling to the Panthers with the 24th overall selection.

“I really like James and think he’s deserving of being a top-10 pick,” Conway wrote. “The problem is that there isn’t a huge demand for safeties this year, so he slides to Carolina.”

This would be a dream pick for Carolina, although it’s highly unlikely. As Conway writes, James is a legitimate top-tier talent who should go in the top 10, although he could slide in the 15-20 range due to the expected run on quarterbacks early in the draft. But James is simply too good to make it to No. 24. In other mock drafts on, the Florida State standout goes anywhere from as high as No. 7 to the Buccaneers or as low to the Chargers at No. 17. In Conway’s mock, the analyst has the Buccaneers selecting another potential talented safety in Minkah Fitzpatrick at No. 7 and the Chargers selecting Alabama defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne at 17th. Conway also has the run on cornerbacks starting earlier than many anticipate, with UCF’s Mike Hughes going to the Packers at No. 14 and Louisville’s Jaire Alexander to the Seahawks at No. 18.
