Chad Stevens has over 20 years of martial arts experience. His MMA school, located in Lexington, NC have some of the most dedicated students around.

Stevens is hosting an open grappling & take down tournament on March 19, 2016 in Winston-Salem, NC.

We caught up with Chad to ask him a few questions.

AMAA Sports: Tell us about your school, Section 8 MMA.

Section 8 MMAStevens: Section 8 is primarily a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy but we also coach and train mixed martial arts fighters.

AMAA Sports: You raise money through Section 8 for charities. Can you tell us a little about that?

Stevens: Every month we donate to a different charity.  Last month it was to a juvenile diabetes charity this month it is to autism speaks in next month we will be working with a multiple sclerosis charity.

AMAA Sports: How did you get started in martial arts?

Stevens: I got started in martial arts back when I was 13 years old.  I started wrestling in junior high school and then began training in karate under Grand Master Shane Williams.  I began studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in my late 20s and I am currently a brown belt under Rubao Carioca.

AMAA Sports: We hear you are hosting a grappling tournament. Can you tell us more about it?

Stevens: The AMAA grappling tournament.  I am working with AMAA Sports to build a friendly competition where students around the state can compete in fun, safe and professional environment. We make sure all the competitors get at least two matches per division and the cost is very affordable.  We also make sure no one walks away empty-handed and everyone gets a medal.  This is our fifth year and each year we have continued to grow.  I’m very excited to see it doing so well. There is more information about the tournament at

AMAA Sports: Have you ever compete professionally in MMA?

Stevens: I have not competed professionally in MMA.  I have an amateur record four wins and one loss.  I do still compete in Jiu Jitsu competitions but it is for the sake of my students not for money.

AMAA Sports: What do you enjoy most about teaching?

Stevens: My favorite part about coaching is watching the people whom I care about most live a happy and healthy lifestyle and I get to be part of that.

AMAA Sports: What are your long term goals with Section 8 MMA?

Stevens: The long term goal is for the Academy to grow large enough that teach full-time.  Our Academy is doing amazing and I’ve got the help of some great students and coaches like Jeff Heisler, to help me get there.  With their help and the help of AMAA Sports Marketing, it won’t be long and my dream will become reality.

One of Chad’s students, Crystal Leonard Phillips, said “I really love training and learning under Chad at Section 8. His teaching styles make it easy for anyone to come in, learn quickly, and apply to life scenarios. The respect he shows for each member is a valued asset. Chad has promoted a very safe training environment at Section 8. The facility is kept clean, in working order and always adding new equipment.”
