WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 3, 2018) – Behind a strong start from right-hander Dylan Cease and three scoreless innings from the Rayados bullpen, Winston-Salem defeated Carolina 5-1 on Sunday at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash (32-25) rebranded as the Winston-Salem Rayados for the second time on Sunday as part of Minor League Baseball’s “Copa De La Diversión,” initiative to embrace participating teams’ local Hispanic communities.

With Sunday’s win, Winston-Salem completes a series sweep of the Carolina Mudcats (27-29) after winning the first two games of the series on Saturday.

Cease (7-2) worked six innings in the contest and allowed just one run on one hit, good for his sixth quality start of the season. The right-hander struck out five and walked two. He now leads the Carolina League with seven wins.

In the top of the second inning, the Mudcats took an early 1-0 lead when Ronnie Gideon led off the inning with a solo home run, one of two hits on the day for Carolina.

However, Zach Remillard responded for the Rayados in the bottom of the third against Mudcats starter Braden Webb (3-4). He drilled Webb’s 2-0 offering over the left-field fence for his fourth home run of the season to tie the game at one.

Winston-Salem would pull ahead with three more runs in the inning to make it a 4-1 game. Following Remillard’s homer, Yeyson Yrizarri drew a walk and Mikey Duarte laid down a bunt single. Then, Joel Booker lined a double to left center to bring home Yrizarri, and Mitch Roman followed with an RBI single to plate Duarte. Booker later scored from third on a sacrifice fly from Luis Basabe.

Cease, Danny Dopico, and Mike Morrison combined to retire 16 consecutive Mudcats from the third to the eighth inning. Dopico struck out two in while facing the minimum in the seventh, and Morrison fired a scoreless eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Rayados added an insurance run. Basabe reached on an infield single and promptly stole second. On the very next pitch, Basabe took off for third, swiping the bag cleanly and coming home to score when Mudcats catcher Max McDowell’s throw sailed into left field.

Matt Foster closed out the game in the ninth, striking out two in a perfect inning to secure the series sweep and Winston-Salem’s fourth straight win.

Following Monday’s scheduled off day, Winston-Salem begins a three-game series with the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Right-hander Luis Martinez (3-4, 4.37 ERA) goes for the Dash against Red Sox left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez (3-2, 4.34 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., and fans can listen live on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
