Prep Football – Diving In With: Caden Davis

Most young quarterbacks may have struggled to maintain confidence in a dual quarterback system, but 2021 6’3 signal caller Caden Davis has embraced the situation along with the ups and downs this year.

RJ Reynolds currently sits (4-5,1-2), on the season, many would argue the young Demons are more talented than their record perceives. Like many teams that feature a lot of youth, the group has to take some bumps along the way in order to grow down the road. Davis has taken this opportunity to learn beside senior quarterback Charlie Mensh in preparation for the future, the two complement one another and each brings a different look for the offense.

“It’s been a little hard this year we’re coming off a couple of tough losses but we have a young team, and we’ll have a lot of returning guys next year. We still have two more games to finish we have to win these two, really it’s been a good season we just have to step it up a little bit.” Davis told SportCarolinaMontly.

“It’s a little challenging splitting time but I feel like you can’t just sit one of us down because we’re both good, sitting one of us really would be hurting the team. Me I use my legs more and Charlie makes it happen with his arm, but ultimately we can do both. I can make it happen with my arm and he can make it happen with his legs too.”

Davis has passed for 437 yards and six touchdowns on the year to this point, he’s also carried the ball 23 times for 137 yards on the ground. Davis is a physical presence at 6’3 and he isn’t afraid to drop his shoulder on a defender. Davis has worked to become more of a vocal leader on the field and remain positive even through times of adversity. With two tough conference games remaining against East Forsyth and Glenn, Davis is confident Reynolds will finish the season strong and continue to build towards a strong future.

“He-(Mensh), has taught me a lot, I try to use what he’s done and his mistakes from last year to help me this year, and he helps me with the reads and reading coverage’s because I’ll still be here next year. I try to use him to help me play better, coming up from JV I just played last year but this year I had to sit back and make reads, it helped me to sit back and watch.” Davis said.

“I think playing tough games now will help for the future it will be a lot easier for us our junior and senior years, really next year we’re going to blow up.”

Davis is also a key player on the Demons basketball team, he recently helped the squad capture the Triad Fall League Championship. On the court Davis is a tough two-way wing, he’s a strong finisher at the cup, and a versatile defender. Reynolds will come in with big confidence this season as the defending Central Piedmont 4A conference champions.

Davis has big expectations for the season and he’s looking forward to getting back on the hardwood in a couple of weeks.

“We’re good right now we don’t have a lot of big’s but we like to run, keep the tempo up, and we’ll be pressing. Really all of us played together last year we just lost a few seniors but we’re going to be straight this year. Playing small defensively it can be tough match up on a big you have to be more aggressive on the boards, but on the offensive end that big will have to come down and guard one of us, so you can pull out and do what you want with them.” Davis said.

“We’re going to have to come out and make a statement especially in the non conference to show we’re going to win the conference again.”
